SAP PP Master Data: Material Masters, BOMs, Work Centres and Routings

Softenant guide / SAP PP

This guide focuses on the production definitions that let SAP plan, schedule and cost a manufactured material consistently.

What this topic solves

SAP PP master data defines the product, component structure, production operations and resources used in planning and execution.

Core objects and terminology

The central building blocks for this area are material masters, bills of material, work centres, routings, production versions, units and standard values.

  • material masters
  • bills of material
  • work centres
  • routings
  • production versions
  • units and standard values

How the process works

The material requirement uses a valid production definition, components are selected from the BOM, and operations are planned through the routing and work centres.

Scenario to practise

A production order cannot select the expected routing or component structure.

Integration and business impact

PP master data connects purchasing, inventory, capacity planning, costing and quality processes.

Worked example: find why the wrong routing was selected

Use a fictional finished product, FG-100, with a base BOM quantity of one unit. Each unit needs two units of component A and one of component B. A planned batch of ten finished units therefore requires twenty A and ten B before considering scrap or other adjustments. Record the units of measure as well as the quantities; a matching number in different units is not a valid comparison.

Now suppose the proposed order shows the wrong assembly operation. Check the selected production version, the BOM and routing it references, their validity dates and the applicable lot-size range. Compare those details with the order quantity and date. Then inspect the routing operations and assigned work centers. Do not change the BOM simply because a scheduling symptom appears on the same order.

Keep a small evidence note with the expected object, selected object, relevant date or quantity, correction and result of a fresh test. Change one condition at a time so the result is explainable. For the next step in the flow, see the production-order lifecycle guide. SAP explains the relationships in its production-order master-data lesson.

Hands-on learning plan

Create a simple finished product with two components and two operations, then explain which master-data object controls each part of execution.
