Softenant guide / SAP PP
This practical overview explains the execution record that plans, authorises, tracks and closes manufacturing work.
What this topic solves
A production order connects planned manufacturing work with execution records, goods movements and cost tracking.
Core objects and terminology
The central building blocks for this area are production orders, reservations, operations, release, confirmations, goods receipt, variance and settlement.
- production orders
- reservations
- operations
- release
- confirmations
- goods receipt
- variance and settlement
How the process works
An order is created from demand, released for execution, confirmed as work progresses, received into stock, and settled after its costs are reviewed.
Scenario to practise
An operation is confirmed but the finished-product quantity is not received as expected.
Integration and business impact
Production orders integrate materials, capacity, quality, cost collection and inventory movements.
Worked example: confirmed quantity and received stock differ
Suppose a fictional production order plans fifty units. The final operation records forty-eight good units and two scrap units, while the goods-receipt record shows forty-six units. Do not assume that the confirmation automatically proves forty-eight units reached stock. Compare the order’s planned quantity, operation confirmations, yield and scrap, goods movements, reversals and the relevant dates.
A confirmation records production progress and activities; a goods receipt records the finished-material receipt. Automatic goods movements depend on the configured process, and an error or separate posting step can leave different document results. First identify whether receipt is expected automatically or manually in the practice system. Then check posted and reversed documents and any associated error records before deciding what needs correction.
Document the two-unit difference as an open investigation until the evidence explains it. Do not create another receipt merely to make a report agree; doing so could duplicate a valid posting. After an authorised correction in a training environment, reconcile the final yield, scrap and receipt quantities again. Review the BOM and routing foundations if the issue begins with order setup. SAP’s production-order processing lesson describes the distinct execution stages.
Hands-on learning plan
Trace a one-product order from planned order to final settlement and record the business evidence produced at each milestone.
Repeated scenario practice turns those relationships into durable working knowledge. Re-run the same scenario with a changed value or missing prerequisite, and explain why the result differs. This variation is where genuine understanding develops.
