Softenant guide / SAP PP
This article examines how SAP converts demand, stock and planning parameters into proposals for procurement or production.
What this topic solves
SAP PP MRP evaluates demand, available supply and planning settings to create or adjust procurement proposals.
Core objects and terminology
The central building blocks for this area are MRP types, reorder points, lot sizes, safety stock, planning file entries, requirements and procurement proposals.
- MRP types
- reorder points
- lot sizes
- safety stock
- planning file entries
- requirements and procurement proposals
How the process works
MRP evaluates supply and demand, applies the material planning settings, and produces proposals that planners convert or adjust.
Scenario to practise
A material has demand but MRP creates no procurement proposal.
Integration and business impact
MRP uses sales, production, inventory and purchasing information to create a coordinated supply picture.
Worked example: explain the net requirement before changing MRP
Consider a fictional material with demand for one hundred units, forty units of usable stock and a firmed receipt for thirty units available before the demand date. With no safety stock, other requirements or lot-size constraints, the simplified shortage is thirty units. This is a learning calculation, not a prediction of every SAP planning run: the real result also depends on planning scope, dates, stock eligibility, receipts and configuration.
If no new proposal appears, first confirm that the demand is present for the material and planning area being examined. Check whether eligible stock or an existing receipt already covers it. Compare the availability dates with the requirement date, then review the MRP type, procurement type, lot-sizing settings and planning-run scope. A proposal arriving after the requirement date does not solve the timing problem simply because its quantity is sufficient.
Change one input in the exercise, such as moving the receipt date, and record which result should change. Keep the before/after requirements view, the exact assumption and the observed message. Use the SAP PP master-data guide when a result points to a material or BOM setting. For the underlying planning concepts, read SAP’s MRP overview.
Hands-on learning plan
Run a small shortage example with safety stock and compare the proposal result under two different lot-sizing choices.
That practical viewpoint makes both troubleshooting and interview answers more precise. Re-run the same scenario with a changed value or missing prerequisite, and explain why the result differs. This variation is where genuine understanding develops.
