Softenant guide / SAP BW/BI
This article examines how SAP BW moves source information through a managed and traceable data-load path.
What this topic solves
SAP BW extraction and loading move source information through mappings and requests that can be traced and checked.
Core objects and terminology
The central building blocks for this area are DataSources, source systems, transformations, routines, DTPs, requests and error stacks.
- DataSources
- source systems
- transformations
- routines
- DTPs
- requests and error stacks
How the process works
A request extracts source records, transforms them into the target structure, loads the target and records technical status for review.
Scenario to practise
A load completes technically but a key business field arrives blank in the target.
Integration and business impact
Data extraction connects operational systems with reports, planning and analytical decision-making.
Worked example: the load is green but a target field is blank
Use a fictional input of one hundred sales records with a customer identifier and amount. Suppose the target contains one hundred records but ten customer identifiers are blank. Matching record counts do not establish field-level correctness. Compare representative source values, the extraction result and the transformation rule for the affected target field.
Separate the responsibilities: the DataSource exposes source information, a transformation maps or derives target values, and a DTP controls which data is transferred and how. Check whether the field is already blank at extraction, is not mapped, or loses a value during conversion or lookup. Review filters and request-specific messages as appropriate; do not assume every blank field is an error-stack record.
Keep a reconciliation note with source count, selected count, target count, rejected records where applicable, key totals and the identifiers used for tracing. Record the load mode and request so a later rerun can be interpreted correctly. Reprocessing requires understanding the target’s update behaviour; repeating a full load is not automatically a safe repair. Connect this investigation with the data-model grain and key checks. For the object responsibilities and options, use SAP’s transformation and DTP lesson.
Hands-on learning plan
Run a small load, compare source and target counts, then deliberately validate one transformed field and one rejected record.
That practical viewpoint makes both troubleshooting and interview answers more precise. Re-run the same scenario with a changed value or missing prerequisite, and explain why the result differs. This variation is where genuine understanding develops.
