Softenant guide / SAP PM
This guide focuses on the asset structure that lets maintenance teams identify what is being maintained, where it operates and which parts it needs.
What this topic solves
SAP PM technical objects identify the asset being maintained, its place in the technical structure and the spare parts relevant to its work.
Core objects and terminology
The central building blocks for this area are equipment, functional locations, equipment BOMs, classes, characteristics, installation history and technical data.
- equipment
- functional locations
- equipment BOMs
- classes
- characteristics
- installation history and technical data
How the process works
A physical asset is represented at the correct location, its history and attributes are maintained, and maintenance work references the same technical object.
Scenario to practise
A repair is recorded against a generic location and the team loses the specific equipment history it needs.
Integration and business impact
Technical objects connect maintenance work with spare parts, cost collection, production context and asset information.
Worked example: replace a pump without losing its identity
Use a fictional cooling line with an installed pump, EQ-100. The line position belongs in the functional-location structure; EQ-100 identifies the individual pump whose maintenance history matters. If a replacement pump EQ-200 is installed, treating it as the same equipment record would blur which unit received earlier repairs.
For a practice exercise, record the old and new equipment identifiers, the installation location and the relevant installation/removal dates. Keep serial and technical details with the appropriate unit. Then check whether a notification refers to the failed pump, the location or an assembly, according to the actual issue. A maintenance BOM helps identify spare parts; it does not replace the equipment’s individual history.
Write a short comparison showing what remains attached to the location and what follows the pump. This helps explain recurring failures at one location versus failures of a particular unit. Continue with the notification and maintenance-order workflow. SAP describes these distinctions in its technical asset structures lesson.
Hands-on learning plan
Model a pump installed in a production line, then decide which information belongs to the equipment and which belongs to the functional location.
